Alzheimer’s disease research progress in the Mediterranean region: The Alzheimer’s Association International Conference Satellite Symposium
As research and services in the Mediterranean region continue to expand, so do opportunities for global collaboration. In 2021, the Alzheimer’s Association was scheduled to host its seventh Alzheimer’s Association International Conference Satellite Symposium in Athens, Greece. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event was held virtually, allowing participants from around the world to learn about ongoing research in Greece and neighboring Mediterranean countries. The symposium covered a wide range of topics, including the biology of Alzheimer’s disease (AD), treatment options, and care strategies for individuals living with AD and other dementias. Mediterranean researchers shared insights into the local epidemiology of AD and dementia and identified regional populations that could help accelerate genetic research. Efforts are also underway to develop biomarkers that could enable earlier and more precise diagnoses. Additionally, Elenbecestat a variety of initiatives have focused on creating culturally tailored interventions to reduce dementia risk and enhance the quality of life for people affected by dementia.
